The aim is to create a relaxed and supportive environment has emerged within the group and foster openness and understanding of the fathers taking part.
What are we covering?
Each week focuses on a different aspect of becoming a parent. We begin by exploring the birth experience and the early weeks of fatherhood. We then turn our attention to how the relationship between parents changes and develops after having a baby. Then, we discuss fatherhood and mental wellbeing. This has included sharing experiences of stress and changes in mood, as well as exploring what helps us relax and recharge.
In the second half of the programme, we explore how becoming a father can shape one’s sense of identity. We will also discuss the particular experiences of raising a family abroad, including being far from family and friends, navigating cultural differences and building a support network in a new country. Another focus will be the father-baby relationship, exploring bonding and attachment alongside the practical challenges of caring for an infant.
Finally, we will invite the participants to reflect on the kind of fathers they would like to become, considering their own upbringings, the values they wish to pass on and the relationships they hope to build with their children.
